A PERSPECTIVE ON CITY LIFE
Museum - Chicago, Illinois Experimenting with perspectives and how they function, the objective of this assignment was to explore the link between perspective and architectural design. Anamorphic Perspective is a type of imagery that requires one to view from a specific point to understand the full extent of the display. Using this notion of framing, the idea was developed to fuse perspective with the themes of a typical downtown Chicago lifestyle. There are two kinds of people that travel among the urban jungles of a downtown area. There is the typical City Walker, who is forced to follow the paths of a city through the power of street signage. City Walkers are restricted from seeing beyond the boundaries created by architecture and urbanism. They participate in day to day life struggles such as running late for work, getting stuck in traffic, or roaming around through the narrows of a street. A Voyeur, on the other hand, experiences a more visionary approach to the city. Typically differentiated by elevation, a voyeur can experience the full extent of a city through observation. Like a god, they stand among the wave of verticals and look down upon the city walkers. Using these two kinds of city lifestyles, the idea came about to frame out city life. Rather than exhibiting still life, the museum will frame “life in motion” as visitors observe pedestrians interacting with themselves, the museum, and the city of Chicago, itself.
